Tarmac Driveways in Sale and the surrounding area

Tarmac has always suited the weather we get around Sale. It sheds water rather than holding on to it, it has no joints to open up over a wet winter, and there is very little to do to keep it in order. Cost is the other half of the case. Tarmac covers a large frontage for a good deal less than a fully paved driveway, and it goes down quickly.

We excavate the driveway, then lay and compact the sub-base before laying the tarmac and rolling it to a smooth, even finish. The falls are set so water runs to the road rather than towards the house, and the edges are finished in block or kerb, which holds the tarmac in place so it does not fret at the perimeter. A block paved border is worth thinking about for that reason as much as for the look of it, since it lifts a plain tarmac drive and locks the edge at the same time.

What’s included

  • Excavation and a compacted sub-base
  • Tarmac laid and rolled to a smooth finish
  • Falls set so water runs away from the house
  • Block or kerb edging to stop the edges breaking up
  • A clean, even black finish

How we do it

  1. 01

    Dig out and base

We excavate, then lay and compact a sub-base sized for the driveway and the traffic.

  2. 02

    Lay and roll

We lay the tarmac and roll it to a smooth, even finish with the falls set so water runs off.

  3. 03

    Edge and finish

We finish the edges in block or kerb so the tarmac holds together at the perimeter.

Why us

Why choose THB Contractors

Before anyone starts lifting your drive it is worth knowing how they go about the work. We price after seeing it, we build the base for the ground we actually find, and the people quoting are the people laying. That has been the way for over 20 years across Bolton, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire, Sale included.

We work out of Bolton across Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire, and Sale is well inside that. The M33 postcodes are regular ground, as are Brooklands, Ashton upon Mersey, Sale Moor, Timperley and Northenden, covered from the same base.

  • Over 20 years’ experience

Over two decades of driveways, patios and commercial surfacing across the North West, with a name built on quality work and tidy sites.

  • A written, itemised quote

After the visit the price arrives written and itemised, so there are no surprises once work begins.

  • The base done properly

A surface fails from below, so the dig-out and base are built for the ground in front of us and what will be driving on it.

  • The same people throughout

The same faces throughout, from the quote to the day we finish.

  • Domestic and commercial

A single drive or a commercial surface, both planned the same careful way.

The price

What affects the price

A free site visit comes first on every Sale job. Trees and what their roots have done to the ground can change the work considerably, and that is something to see rather than estimate.

The main things that move the figure:

  • The area and the depth of excavation needed
  • The edging chosen and any kerbing
  • Access for the paver, wagons and roller
  • Falls, and any new edgings

Common questions

How soon can I drive on new tarmac?

You can usually walk on it the same day and drive on it after a short curing period. We tell you exactly when on the day.

Why do tarmac edges crack?

Usually because the edge was not restrained. We finish tarmac against a block or kerb edge so the perimeter does not fret and break away.

What colours does tarmac come in?

Standard black is the most common, with a red tarmac option available. We go through the choices and edging at the visit.

Do you offer tarmac driveways near Brooklands?

Yes. As well as Sale itself we cover Brooklands, Ashton upon Mersey, Sale Moor, Timperley, Northenden. Call 0161 451 0824 if you are not sure whether you are in range.
