Patios in Manchester and the surrounding area

Slabs that rock and water sitting against the wall both come from the same two things: a thin bed and falls that were never set. We get both right before anything is laid. A Manchester patio is built on driveway principles, so we excavate, build the base, set the falls away from the building, then lay the slabs. Natural stone, concrete paving or porcelain, with steps and edging tied in so it reads as one piece.

A well-built patio gives you extra outdoor living space and somewhere to relax, whether that is a family barbecue or a quiet corner of the garden. We lay patios in Indian sandstone, porcelain and block paving, chosen with you to suit the house, and a good one adds real value as well as kerb appeal.

What’s included

How we do it

  1. 01

    Set out and dig

We set the patio out, excavate, and build the base with the falls running away from the house.

  2. 02

    Lay on a full bed

We lay each slab on a full mortar bed rather than dabs, so nothing rocks or lifts later.

  3. 03

    Point and finish

We point the joints, finish the edges, and tie the patio into steps as needed.

THB Contractors patios work in Manchester

Why us

Why choose THB Contractors

Letting a contractor dig up the front of your property is a decision, and it is fair to want to know how they work first. We price off a proper look at the job, we build the base for the ground we actually find rather than to a standard depth, and the people who quote it are the people who lay it. That is how we have worked for over 20 years across Bolton, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire, Manchester included.

We are based in Bolton and work across Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire. Manchester and the M2 postcodes sit at the middle of that, and we are in the city regularly rather than now and then. Ancoats, Hulme, Ardwick, Collyhurst and Cheetham Hill are covered on the same basis.

  • Over 20 years’ experience

Twenty years and more of driveways, patios and commercial surfacing across the North West, with the work and the tidiness of it the reason most of our jobs come by word of mouth.

  • A written, itemised quote

The price comes to you in writing once we have seen the job, itemised, so the figure you agree is the figure you pay.

  • The base done properly

A surface gives way from below long before it shows on top, so the dig-out and the sub-base are sized for the ground we find, not for a standard depth.

  • The same people throughout

The same faces from the quote through to the final sweep. Nobody gets handed on to a crew you have not met.

  • Domestic and commercial

A single drive or a commercial car park, both planned and priced the same careful way.

The price

What affects the price

Access does more to a city price than most people expect, so every Manchester quote follows a free site visit. We would rather see how the materials and the muck will get in and out than guess at it.

The main things that move the figure:

  • The paving chosen (porcelain and natural stone differ from concrete)
  • The area, and any steps or level changes
  • Excavation and disposal
  • Access to the rear of the property

Common questions

Why do patios lift and rock?

Almost always a thin bed and poor falls. We lay on a full mortar bed with the falls set properly, which is what stops slabs rocking and holding water.

Can you lay porcelain?

Yes. Porcelain needs the right bed and priming to bond, which we do as standard, so it lasts as well as it looks.

What materials can you lay?

Indian sandstone, porcelain, natural stone and block paving are all options. Which suits depends on the look, the budget and how the patio will be used — we talk it through at the visit.

Do you offer patios near Ancoats?

Yes. As well as Manchester itself we cover Ancoats, Hulme, Ardwick, Collyhurst, Cheetham Hill. Call 0161 451 0824 if you are not sure whether you are in range.
